Dual Mode Teaching
Which method?
With the return to campus approaching and the installation of new technology in Encore enabled rooms, it may seem confusing as to which method of recording to choose. To support your decision, we have provided several brief FAQ's as to what aspects of Encore can be used with various pieces of synchronous teaching software (Teams, Zoom etc) and corresponding recording hardware.

I have a scheduled recording taking place in an Encore enabled room. Can I stream the session?
Yes - Any content that is displayed on the projector and heard through the speakers can be recorded by Encore, as per the automatic recording standard.
As long as the content being captured is displayed via the Teaching PC or a laptop attached to the AV system, the session will be recorded. You can use Zoom/Teams to stream a lecture in this sense.
Sessions will automatically start and stop in line with the standard Encore lecture capture procedure.
Staff are encouraged to continue to make use of lapel/handheld mics (if available) in the room to ensure the audio quality is suitable on the recording itself.
I'd like to start an ad-hoc recording in an Encore enabled room. Can I stream this session?
Yes - In the same way as a scheduled recording, by way of starting a Zoom/Teams call on the Teaching PC and ensuring the AV in the room is on. Anything that is displayed via the projector will be captured, as well as microphone audio and speaker output. These sessions are still limited to 50 minutes and we advise staff to continue to make use of the microphones in each space to provide adequate audio for the recording.
Can I use the OWL's in an Encore enabled room?
Yes - All content that is projected and heard in the room will be recorded. The OWL is primarily used to interact with students off site and so a Zoom/Teams call would also be required.
Further information on the new OWL's can be found here:

Can I use Panopto's Webcast feature to stream a session?
Unfortunately, not with automatic scheduled recordings. This feature requires additional development time and as such won't be available for the beginning of term.
Staff can, however, make use of the Panopto Desktop Recorder to perform a recording via the teaching PC. Instructions on how to do so can be found here:
https://support.panopto.com/s/article/Live-Webcast
It should be noted that the delay on Panopto Webcast is roughly 15 seconds and ideally not suited for interactive sessions.
Which Encore enabled rooms are suitable for asynchronous recording?
A number of rooms in the Palatine Centre and the Teaching and Learning Centre have been upgraded to allow for asynchronous teaching.

Do I need to record my session in Zoom/Teams?
No - If your session is being automatically recorded by Encore (as per timetabled lecture recordings) then Encore will record the lecture and upload it into the relevant Module area in Ultra/Panopto.
As per the standard Ad-Hoc recording procedure, you will still need to contact the IT Service Desk to have the recording transferred from the remote recorder to your personal recording area or module folder.
Also, if you intend to use the Panopto Desktop Recorder (via AppsAnywhere) this will also be recorded, only you are able to choose the location of the recording prior to it taking place.
