Abstract

Researching multilingually is an umbrella term used (in e.g. Holmes et al. 2013) which seeks to identify and highlight the decision-making researchers engage in regarding language in the many stages of their research processes. In applied linguistics contextualised uses of language are both the object of research and the medium for exploring new research questions. In this chapter we review how applied linguists in distinctive areas such as linguistic ethnography and intercultural communication, amongst others, have highlighted and interrogated the language choices they have made in generating their data, reviewing literature, analysing data, and presenting findings. We conclude with ideas for how researching multilingually can be further opened out for critical discussion in applied linguistics research.
