Biography

Graham Coates is a Reader in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at Durham University. He has a BSc honours degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Computational Engineering Design. His doctoral research focused on developing an integrated approach to real-time operational design co-ordination, which was realised within an agent-based system in a distributed computing network. Partially funded by BAE Systems, his PhD research was carried out at Newcastle University and done in collaboration with Strathclyde University. His post-doctoral research was conducted in the area of process control and scheduling optimisation on a European Union funded project related to the development of a technology platform for virtual ship systems.

Since joining Durham University, Graham has built on his PhD in operational design co-ordination with his research evolving in two main areas: disaster / emergency management, computational engineering design and analysis. In the area of disaster / emergency management, his research has focused on: (i) co-ordinated emergency response using agent-based modelling and simulation (ABMS) coupled with optimised decision support; (ii) flood risk management using ABMS. In computational engineering design and analysis, his research has focused on: (iii) hyper-heuristic optimisation for aircraft structural design; (iv) real-time stress analysis for aircraft structures.

In terms of industrial experience, Graham spent seven years working as an aerospace engineer at British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) and CAV Aerospace. The majority of his industrial experience was gained in the areas of aircraft structures, aerodynamics and flight testing. Industrial projects he has worked on include various structural and aerodynamic certification aspects of turbo prop aircraft and laminar flow technology for future aircraft.
