Provides technicial support and oversees aspects of the day-to-day running of operations in both the stable isotope laboratory and the isotope and elemental laboratories in the Earth Sciences Department. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support and advice for laboratory procedures including the preparation of reagents, sample preparation, chemical separation and purification of elements.
  • Addressing and managing health and safety issues associated with laboratory and analytical work including COSHH.
  • On-site training in the use of the instruments in both the Stable Isotope Laboratory and the radiogenic and trace element laboratories.

 

Assists with the daily operation, diagnostic testing and investigations during instrument malfunctions of the following scientific instruments :

  • Thermo-Finnigan MAT 253 Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) online with a Thermo-Finnigan Gasbench II, used to quantify, to a high level of precision, the oxygen and carbon isotope ratios within the inorganic fraction of sedimentary rock, tooth and bone samples.
  • Thermo-Finnigan Neptune (MC-ICP-MS) used to measure both traditional radiogenic (Sr, Nd, Pb, Os and Hf) and novel stable (Fe, Mo, Li, Si, Sr) isotopes in biological, archaeological, environmental and geological materials.
  • Thermo-Finnigan Triton (TIMs) used primarily to measure traditional radiogenic (Sr, Nd, Pb and Os) isotopes to a very high level of precision in biological, archaeological, environmental and geological materials.

 

Also has past experience on the operation and maintenance of a Thermo-Finnigan Delta V Advantage Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) online with a Costech Elemental Analyser (EA) and a Thermo-Finnigan Temperature Conversion Elemental Analyzer (TC/EA), used to quantify, to a high level of precision, the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios within organic fractions of sedimentary rocks, plants and animal tissues.
