Consultation on the divestment of Fossil Fuels

UPDATE: A final document, including recommendations, was presented to UEC on the 10th October 2017 and this document will now be passed through the University's Governance processes before being presented to Senate in November and Council in December 2017. A fuller statement regarding the outcomes and recommendations of the Divestment Commission will be released in January 2018.

The Commission on Divestment from Companies involved in Fossil Fuels extraction has now released a Summary of Opinion. This document is available here.

Expected Timescales


September: The Commission met for the first time on the 23rd September 2016.

The consultation officially opens on the 26th October 2016. Comments will be received from staff and students to the Commission via inter aliia an anonymised web form, dedicated email address, town hall meeting etc.

December: Dr Amanda Ellison and Kate Deeming will host a town hall meeting on the 16th December 2016, 12.00 - 13.00, Kenworthy Hall, St Mary's College. All welcome.

The consultation period will close to comments.


February: The Commission will meet for the second time to discuss the comments received.

April: A summary of opinion was published to this website

October: Final Report presented to UEC.

November: Final Report presented to Senate

December: Final report presented to University Council.


January: Statement to be released regarding outcomes of the Divestment Commission.
