Biography

Zoe graduated in 2001 from Anglia Ruskin University with a 2:1 Honours degree in Law. She holds an LLM in International Business Law from the University of Manchester (2002). She also obtained a distinction in the LLM in Energy Law and Policy from the Centre of Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy of the University of Dundee (2004). She completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in York in 2006.

Zoe worked as legal counsel in the private sector from 2004 until she joined Durham Law School as a lecturer between 2007 and 2010. She taught Company law, Commercial law and Land law on the undergraduate degree, as well as Corporate Governance, Commercial Fraud and E-Commerce on the LLM.

In October 2011, Zoe returned to Durham Law School to study for a PhD, having received a full scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Research

Zoe’s current research is in the area of joint ventures and strategic alliances and focuses, in particular, on fiduciary duties and their place in contracts negotiated at arm’s length between sophisticated commercial parties. Her thesis seeks to establish a rationally justifiable principle upon which fiduciary duties can be implied into such relationships by making use of game theory as expressed in David Gauthier’s Morals by Agreement (Clarendon Press 1986). It will use unincorporated joint ventures in the oil and gas sector as a case study.

Zoe is supervised by Prof. Deryck Beyleveld and Prof. Christian Witting.
