Personal Profile

I am an Associate Professor and Head of MA programmes in the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD). I sit on the DCAD Management Advisory Committee and the Arts and Humanites Faculty Ethics Committee.

Previously, from October 2012 to 2016, I was Head of Teaching and Learning in the English Language Centre and from 2016-2018 I was Chair of the Departmental Undergraduate and Postgraduate Boards of Examiners. I also established and chaired the Department's Research and Scholarship committee.

For nine years I served as Director of the Centre's Academic Writing Unit focusing on the provision of academic writing support within the range of University departments, for example through providing extended courses to first year undergraduates in the Business School and a range of introductory and other academic writing focused sessions in various departments from Chemistry to Public Medicine and Health, to Applied Social Sciences to Politics.

The Academic Writing Unit was also responsible for the department's one-to-one consultation service which I oversee and which delivered more than 1500 consultations in 2016-2017. I received an Excellence in Teaching and Learning award in 2016 for my work in establishing and managing the consultation service.

I also deliver doctoral writing support sessions to doctoral students within the framework of DCAD and within the School of Education and other departments. 

In terms of teaching, I lecture on the MA in Applied Linguistics /TESOL, leading and teaching modules in Evaluation and Assessment, Language for Teachers, Advanced Research Methods, Discourse, Texts and TESOL, and English for Specific Purposes and also teach the Dissertation Research Methods component of the Dissertation module.

My applied linguistics doctorate involved a study of business case report writing at UK universities, but I have a range of research interests from academic business writing, to disciplinary writing, to the use of language models.

In terms of broader engagement with the field, I have presented at a range of conferences, and published three papers in the area of academic writing. I'm also a member of the BALEAP testing panel and I was one of the co-authors of the BALEAP Guidelines on English Language Tests for University Entry (2012).

Before arriving at Durham I worked at a number of universities including Birmingham University, Aston University, University of Surrey Roehampton, and Nottingham University on various English for Academic Purposes and specialist English programmes.

I have taught English in Sri Lanka, Greece, Thailand, and Oman.
