A comparison of the roles and features of Sasanian cities.
My research focuses on cities that were occupied during the Sasanian period. Using case studies, I will be comparing the physical features and locations of cities, as well as evidence for their economic, administrative, and political roles in the Sasanian Empire. I will also be considering influences from previous cultures, reasons for city growth or abandonment, the surrounding landscapes, and layout.
By drawing these comparisons, it will be possible to investigate what regional factors and attributes there may have been in the Sasanian approach to their cities, and therefore how adaptable or flexible the Sasanian system was. In identifying any regional differences, what patterns or changes there may have been in the city roles across the empire may be more clearly understood, especially in regards to the eventual decline of the empire.
