Research Topic

‘Translating metaphor from both directions: a process-oriented study’

My research project is a process-oriented study which evaluates directional difference in translating metaphor, i.e. how L1 > L2 differs from L2 > L1 translation of metaphor.. This study based on Chinese and English, assumes that: 1. directionality affects the cognitive process of translators translating metaphors; 2. the different translation strategies adopted by translators when translating metaphors require different amounts of cognitive effort; and 3. a key variable in these differences is the professional level of translators. The process-oriented research methods employed mainly involve eye-movement tracking, TAPs and key-logging; among these eye tracking is the main focus.
