(email at oskar.polanski@durham.ac.uk)

Biography

I am a part-time tutor of the EU Constitutional Law module and studying towards a Master of Jurisprudence (MJur). Having attained a First-Class Honours degree at Law in Durham, I have decided to continue my studies and further my knowledge of the law as a constraint on politics.

My research interests include constitutionalism, the rule of law and other aspects of public law and legal theory, as well as the functioning of the supranational legal order and the European Union. At undergraduate level, I was part of the Durham Lawyers Without Borders student division where I produced essays on chosen rule of law and human rights related issues. As a Member of the Durham European Law Institute I helped to organise the annual student debate, where I also assumed the role of one of the judges of the panel, and I organised a dissertation workshop for fellow students where I was able to provide feedback and advice on improvement of theses. I have recently joined Law and Global Justice at Durham and the Durham Centre for Law and Philosophy.

Alongside these commitments, I managed to become a semi-finalist in a Herbert Smith Freehills negotiation competition in London, organised by the Durham Law Society, and have worked as a research assistant for Professor Robert Schütze.

Outside of the law school, I lent a hand with improving Collingwood College’s gym facilities, where I designed the new college gym as the Male Gym Officer.

Thesis

My thesis will consider the ability, legitimacy and desirability of the European Union, as a supranational institution, to control domestic affairs in Member States, with a particular focus on Poland and reverting the democratic backsliding therein. I am supervised by Professor Roger Masterman (Primary) and Professor Robert Schutze (Secondary).

Teaching

My office hours will be held on Tuesdays 11:00-12:00 via Microsoft Teams
