Biography

Panos received his MEng (5-year) degree in Civil Engineering in 2003 from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Following his undergraduate studies, he obtained an MSc in Structural Engineering (2005) and a PhD in Applied Mechanics (2009) from the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences at NTUA. After his PhD studies, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanics at NTUA. In 2012, he joined the Solid Mechanics group at the University of Trento in Italy working as a Marie-Curie research fellow (2014) and later as a research associate (2016). Panos joined the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences at Durham University as a Lecturer (now Assistant Professor) in Applied Mechanics in 2016.

Research

Panos’ research focuses on the micromechanical modelling of deformation and failure mechanisms in heterogeneous microstructured solids. The microstructural morphology is incorporated in the mechanical analysis through the use of enhanced generalized continuum theories (Cosserat, strain-gradient, and micromorphic theories). Typical cases of continua amenable to such an analysis are material structures like ceramics, foams, polymers, and cellular materials. In this framework, Panos is actively working in the areas of fracture and contact mechanics, material instabilities (shear bands, folding, stress channelling), dislocations, and wave propagation in solids. The problems under investigation are approached primarily by advanced analytical methods (integral equations, Wiener-Hopf techniques, complex potentials, asymptotic analysis of PDEs) and numerical techniques (finite element and boundary element methods), while when possible support is provided by experimental methods.
