Current Research

My research seeks to understand the sociological and psychological processes that contribute to conservative Christian attitudes towards gender roles in society more broadly, and towards women’s ordination to the priesthood and their consecration as bishops in particular. It employs thematic narrative analysis, based on descriptive and focused coding, in order to analyse semi-structured interviews with male priests from evangelical and Anglo-catholic traditions within the Church of England. The emerging narrative themes are interpreted with Christian Smith’s sociological theory of Engaged Orthodoxy, which is then developed by being brought into dialogue with social psychological research on intergroup contact. This is in order to offer a fuller description of clergy beliefs and behaviours pertaining to gender roles, and to further theorise the motivational forces behind them.
