Technical Manager Mechanical Services, and Mechanical Workshop Manager.
These facilities provide a central service to the teaching and research activities throughout the Department of Engineering.

Colin’s main area of responsibility is the management of the technician teams in the Mechanical, Civil and Thermofluids workshops and laboratory areas, primarily the planning and delivering of effective direct technician support throughout the department, and designing, sourcing, building and maintaining special purpose research and teaching equipment.

An active member of the Higher Education and Technician Education Development organisation, Colin provides specialist training for technicians throughout UK Universities as part of the National STEM skills development programme https://www.stem.org.uk/heated . He also delivers instruction and supervision throughout various individual and team based student challenges, and supports student extra-curricular experiences such as Durham University Electric Motorsport https://duem.org/ , Engineers without Borders https://www.ewb-uk.org/ and several Durham University volunteering and outreach programmes.

Trained in Kepner Tragoe Analytical Troubleshooting and as a NEBS Management Team Leader, Colin also contributes to the organisation as a member of the Technical Managers Network, Departmental Health and Safety Committee and as a HABC Level 3 First Aider.

Special projects have included a range of external consultancy activities, collaborative research work with other departments, assistance in procurement tender processes, and technical support in the development of Encore lecture capture technology https://www.dur.ac.uk/encore/

Qualifications include: City & Guilds Mechanical Technician Certificate (ONC)

 EITB Certificate in Engineering Craftsmanship (T6)

 TEC Certificate (HNC) in Plant Engineering
