Mr Peter Grundy
I'm an Honorary Fellow in the English Language Centre, where I share responsibility for the Language Teaching Methodology module on the MA TESOL and teach a module on Pragmatics and the Language Classroom.
At the start of my career, I taught in schools in the UK and Germany, and then moved into teacher training. I joined the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Durham in 1979, and, apart from a two-year spell in Hong Kong (1994-6), worked there until taking early retirement in 2002. Since 2002, I've worked at various universities on fractional and short-term contracts (Leeds, Leicester, Northumbria) and most recently at the University of Vienna, where I was a visiting professor in the 2011-12 winter semester.
My interests are in language teaching methodology and in pragmatics. I'm author or co-author of a number of resource books for teachers and of Doing Pragmatics (3edn, Routledge, 2008). My two most recent books are English through Art (Helbling Languages, 2011), which I worked on with Hania Bociek and Kevin Parker, and The Routledge Pragmatics Reader (2011), which I edited jointly with Dawn Archer.
I'm past President of IATEFL and a frequent speaker at international conferences as well as a facilitator on teacher development seminars around the world.
