Best Bar None
(27 October 2008)
A competition was launched in March to find the best-run venue in the city centre area. All 52 licensees were invited to take part in the scheme, which was launched as part of 'Nightsafe' – a multi-agency strategy aimed at managing the booming night time economy in Durham.
The 'Best Bar None' assessors visited nearly three dozen premises, looking at issues such as the facilities provided for customers, staff training, security, measures implemented to combat binge drinking and the use of 'shatterproof' polycarbonate glasses.
There were four categories - best bar, best pub, best nightclub and best college bar. At the awards ceremony which took place at the Ramside Hall Hotel on Tuesday 14th October, Kingsgate was crowned Best Bar in Durham. The Students' Union bar then went on to beat all of the pubs, college bars and clubs in the city to become Best Bar None 2008 overall winner, making Kingsgate the safest and best run licensed premises in the city.
This award shows the calibre of staff working at the Union, their commitment, enthusiasm, and sheer hard work. All of those who contributed to this win have shown their passion to get things right and Graham Ambler (Bars Manager) paid tribute to them all in his acceptance speech.
