Energy and Sustainability Team update

(19 March 2021)

This term the team has been busy, taking part in various Council Meetings, organising open forums and workshops for feedback and discussion, establishing a Biodiversity Group and developing a new strategy for sustainability across the University, to name but a few. Continue reading for more information and to find out how you can get involved. Together we can make an impact.

Since switching up our Environment Schedule for the new My Greenspace Calendar, we’ve been making use of Microsoft Sway for our online Campaigns – so far we’ve had the Power Down Challenge, Fairtrade February, and we’re currently on March Out Waste.

Check out the Sways linked in the text and find new ways to Power Down or March Out Waste.

After last summer’s successful biodiversity survey, we have now established a Biodiversity Group to develop an action plan to enhance our estate. Watch this space for the new Biodiversity Action Plan.

Hedgehog Friendly Campus – Bronze Accreditation

The Bronze award has been accredited by the Hedgehog Preservation Society and was achieved by completing hedgehog-friendly activities, conducting hedgehog surveys, taking part in The Big Hedgehog Friendly Litter Pick, in which the University came third, and many other activities. We are now working on attaining the Silver award. Thank you to our volunteers, our Working Group, Student Conservation Groups, and the Grounds & Gardens Team.

Well done to everyone who took part in the Litter Pick. We collected a total of 91.5 bags of litter! Also, a huge thank you for the hard work of our Gardens and Grounds Team who got involved in collecting over 40 bags of litter.

De-stress and listen to Nature's Audio

Nature's Audio ( is run by the Biosciences department. Nature’s Audio is a “citizen science” platform intended to collate, validate, and curate acoustic data that can inform us about the distribution, ecology and behaviour of sound-producing organisms, with an initial emphasis on songbirds.
