Tune in to nature
(19 February 2021)
Want to experience the sounds of Spring indoors? And to engage in a citizen science project? We have developed a new website to allow people to listen to birdsong, learn a few garden birdsongs, test yourself and perhaps have a go at recording (on a smart-phone) or even classifying uploaded clips. No prior knowledge necessary. Find out more here.
The NaturesAudio project has been developed by staff in Biosciences to encourage people to engage in nature. We’re hoping that as well as getting people to listen to birdsong, and perhaps learn a few common birds, we can also encourage people to contribute recordings from their own back-garden, window-ledge or local walk. All that’s needed is a smart-phone, and easy-to-follow instructions are available here. You could then try to identify the birds yourself using our helpful guides, or wait for someone else to identify them for you.
The benefits of engaging in wildlife and greenspace on mental health and well-being are increasingly recognised. The empty roads during spring 2020 enhanced awareness of the sounds of nature. We’re hoping this project will allow many other people to enjoy birdsong and the outdoors, whilst collecting valuable scientific data. The project is running all spring but we’re keen to get early feedback on usability from staff/students.
