Wi-Fi refresh programme update
(29 January 2021)
We want a University that is strong, robust and ready for the future. The way we manage our IT is no different, and we constantly review, update and refresh our infrastructure to ensure it meets the needs of our staff and students now and into the future. The Wi-Fi Refresh project is currently modernising all Wi-Fi kit across the University. We’re keen to make our Wi-Fi more reliable and accessible, wherever you are on campus.
To do this, we’re installing latest-generation access points. This will provide better Wi-Fi coverage as we move from place to place across campus. We’re also adding more access points - in areas outside buildings and in known blackspots to help signals reach into corners of buildings that have previously struggled to get good Wi-Fi reception. In a student bedroom or staff office, this will mean a more reliable connection (including via our LinkIT service for all types of streaming, speaker and games devices), whilst in our busiest locations more people will be able to connect their devices simultaneously.
We’re over half way through the project, and despite the restrictions of lockdown and social distancing, we are doing well. We’ve now switched over two thirds of our Colleges and around half of our Science site buildings onto the updated Wi-Fi, with the remaining Colleges and Departments due to be upgraded by the end of the Autumn.
