St John's Cafe Scientifique

(8 January 2021)

What role does herd immunity play in the control of COVID-19? St John's Café Scientifique is honoured to present a talk by Professor Sunetra Gupta, Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford on Monday 18 January 2021 at 7pm. Professor Gupta is one of the world experts on epidemiology and will discuss the problem of herd immunity in Covid-19.

The term herd immunity has been widely misunderstood and misinterpreted in the conversations surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is the conceptual basis for the development of herd immunity and how are ‘herd immunity thresholds’ defined?

How can we measure levels of herd immunity in a population?

How does a vaccine impact on the development of herd immunity? How do we design a minimum harm strategy incorporating these features and the inherent uncertainties?
