Wireless Improvement Project update

(23 October 2020)

You may have noticed that in the weeks leading up to teaching, our wireless services have had some planned and unplanned downtime. This was caused by maintenance works to replace legacy network equipment. We are glad to say that work has now concluded, and we have a more resilient and secure service.

We have also been progressing with our wireless improvement project over recent months and have maintained progress despite the Covid-19 pandemic. We have already installed an additional 1000 wireless access points as part of this project.

We thought it would be useful to give an update on our wireless service as well as provide an update on our wireless improvement project.

You may have noticed that in the weeks leading up to teaching our wireless services have had some planned and unplanned downtime. This was caused by maintenance works to replace legacy network equipment.

The impact of this maintenance was quite far reaching. Whilst we tried to minimise this as much as possible, due to the scale of the works, it was disruptive, in the end a little more so than we’d hoped! We are glad to say that work has now concluded, and we have a more resilient and secure service. We continually maintain our systems but always endeavor to keep any disruption is kept to a minimum.

CIS have been progressing with our wireless improvement project over recent months and have maintained progress despite the Covid-19 pandemic. We have already installed an additional 1000 wireless access points as part of the work to complete the implementation at

  • Collingwood College
  • Grey College
  • Josephine Butler College
  • Ustinov College - Dryburn site
  • Stephenson College
  • Biological Sciences
  • University Library

We are nearing completion at:

  • St Aidan’s College
  • Trevelyan College

This significant project will see CIS come into each College, Department and University building to improve Wi-Fi capacity and connectivity, remove blackspots and enhance internet speed. We are prioritising the remainder of our residential estate, but will also run some non-residential works where possible to increase the speed of implementation. As we continue, disruption will be kept to a minimum with only short service impacts on a small geographic scale, for example a corridor or block.

Due to the current Covid-19 situation we are having to constantly review the programme to ensure we work in a Covid safe manner. We continue to work with college and department management teams to plan and communicate the wireless improvement works, ensuring we have robust processes in place.

As ever if you are experiencing an issue with wireless we’d urge you to log this via the dedicated form here. Please note, we aim to investigate all issues as soon as possible, but this is particularly challenging during the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, accessing a student bedroom if the student is self-isolating isn’t possible.

Updates on the status of our services, including wireless, can be found via our Service Status page here, where you can also subscribe to receive notifications directly to your email address.
