Matariki Covid-19 online photo gallery: 'Partnering for a better world'

(5 June 2020)

The Covid-19 pandemic has swept across the entire world during the first part of 2020; leaving extreme destruction and devastation in its wake. As a way of documenting this unprecedented moment in time and to look forward to a more positive future together, the Matariki Network would like to set up a collaborative online photo gallery to help build our community and generate virtual network connections in a time of increased physical distancing. Students, staff and Faculty members across the Matariki Network are experiencing the impacts COVID-19 in a variety of different ways. This collection of photos will seek to demonstrate the diversity of experience that has arisen from a single, common event.

How it works:

Students, staff and Faculty members are invited to submit a photograph relating to their personal pandemic experience. Since the strapline of the Matariki Network is “partnering for a better world”, we are asking participants to contribute images which reflect how this is being achieved across the world during times of extreme difficulty and challenge. This could be around the theme of social distancing, ways of maintaining mental wellness during lockdown and beyond, the notion of global citizenship, family life and traditions, changes in your home institution or local area, experiences abroad relating to COVID-19, or anything else relating to your own personal experience or impressions of this current global crisis.

As well as photographs that reflect the current situation you find yourself in, submitted images may also relate to our theme of “partnering for a better world” pre- or post-pandemic. In this case, explanatory captions ought to include at least some reference to the Covid-19 pandemic and its relevance to your chosen image. All photos must be accompanied by a brief caption to explain how the image demonstrates the importance of “partnering for a better world”. Photos and captions should be emailed to lucy.s.turzynski@durham.ac.uk. Please include your institution, department (if applicable) and status (student, staff or Faculty member).

All suitable photos received will be collated into an online gallery on the Matariki website, which will also be shared and promoted on Twitter and potentially also via individual partners’ online platforms. By submitting your photo to this initiative, the photographer thereby grants permission to the Matariki Network to publish their photo in print (brochures, advertisements, etc.) or electronic media (web, social media, etc.) to promote and/or highlight network activities. The photographer will receive photo credit wherever possible.

Deadline to submit images: Tuesday 30 June 2020

Eligibility:

  • All undergraduate and graduate students currently registered at a Matariki partner institution (including exchange students), as well as any staff/Faculty members currently employed by one of the seven Matariki partner institutions;
  • Original photo must be taken by the person submitting it, with permission from any people that appear in the photo;
  • One photo submission per person;
  • Photos should be high-resolution (minimum 2mb) and in PNG or JPEG format
  • Applicants should provide a short (three to four sentence) caption describing the photo and how it fits with the network strapline of “partnering for a better world”;
  • Submission deadline: 30 June 2020.
