Unmanned aerial vehicles/ drones (UAVs)

(4 October 2019)

The Civil Aviation Authority regulations governing the use of UAVs within the UK are changing with effect from Tuesday, 1 October 2019. Any UAV use on Durham University business or over University premises must be compliant with the regulations.

Before undertaking any UAV activity you must familiarise yourself with the regulations. DU Public Liability cover for UAV use has been updated to reflect the changes to the CAA regulations. Details of the cover requirements are available via this link. Any UAV use on DU business within the UK which does not comply with CAA regulations would not be covered. Additional advice regarding the regulation changes has been issued by DU liability cover providers (UMAL). This includes details of the criminal penalties for breach of the regulations which can range from fines to imprisonment.
