Volunteering opportunities at Celebrate Science 2019

(27 September 2019)

Celebrate Science is here again! It’s our 10th anniversary and we are currently looking for volunteers to help out at this year's festival on Palace Green. If you are interested please contact Event Durham directly with details of when you are available and whether you have any scientific specialism as soon as possible? Your involvement in Celebrate Science would be a huge help. Meanwhile, if you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact the team at

The event will run from Tuesday 29 – Thursday 31 October, open to the public from 10am until 4pm daily. It brings together exhibitors from across the university alongside external partners to showcase science to children in a fun and engaging way. We regularly attract over 7,000 visitors, many of whom have visited in previous years.

We need flexible, helpful volunteers to help with:

  • Welcoming visitors
  • Handing out information leaflets and answering queries
  • General stewarding duties, directing people around the marquee, or on to other places in Durham
  • Helping to record the number of visitors and encouraging feedback
  • Helping out as and when required.

We are also interested in hearing from volunteers who are passionate about science and willing and able to help with running some of the practical hands-on activities at the event.

We need people to be available for at least one volunteering shift. Shifts are split into mornings 9.30am until 1pm and afternoons 12.30pm until 5pm. People are welcome to volunteer for as much or as little time as they can spare and we really appreciate how busy they are.
