Self-guided tours at Durham Castle

(19 July 2019)

Why not visit Durham Castle this summer for a self-guided tour? Our knowledgeable guides and volunteers will answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden history of the Castle. Tickets can be bought at Palace Green Library and the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre. No need to book and normal charges apply.

Experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history. Built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. Discover a castle that gradually turned into a lavish palace, which was affected by major historical events from the Reformation to the English Civil War. It was transformed in the Victorian period into a place of learning, as the home of University College, the founding college of Durham University. Please note, there will be no guided tours in operation during these days but there will be talks throughout the day.

Our self-guided days will happen on the following dates, 11.15am to 4.15pm (last entry 3.30pm):

  • 31 July
  • 1 August
  • 6 August
  • 7 August
  • 13 August
  • 14 August
  • 19 August
  • 20 August
  • 27 August
  • 28 August

The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs. The castle has many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.
