Northern Accelerator funding - call for applications

(18 January 2019)

Are you looking for a way to make an impact with your research? If you’re interested in exploring commercial opportunities for the outcomes of your work, Northern Accelerator funding could be for you. Applications are invited for the second round of funding from Northern Accelerator, a collaboration between four North East universities to increase commercialisation of opportunities arising from high quality research. The deadline for the current funding call is 31 March 2019. To find out more about what the funding can be used for, and the application process, visit

The partnership between Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland Universities is funded by Research England and includes a number of initiatives. One of these provides £1.65m of funds to support promising new research outcomes to test their commercial viability.

Funding is available in two forms – feasibility awards and proof of concept awards.

Applications are encouraged from researchers who are new to research commercialisation, as well as more experienced colleagues.

The second call for funding follows hot on the heels of the inaugural round which saw an impressive 27 applications being put forward to an assessment panel. The panel, consisting of representatives from each of the partner universities alongside invited innovation experts, will make a decision on each application at the end of January.

For an informal discussion about making an application for a feasibility or proof of concept award, please contact your Technology Transfer Manager, Mike Bath or Heather Allinson.
