Riverbank repairs at Maiden Castle

(1 September 2017)

On Monday, 4 September Durham County Council (DCC) will begin work to rebuild a 40 metre stretch of riverbank between Maiden Castle and Durham City Rugby Club. It is estimated that the work will take eight to 12 weeks and for the duration of the works the section of footpath and the other routes leading to the site will be closed. Alternative routes between Green Lane and the Graham Sports Centre will need to be used until the works are complete. Details of alternative routes are available here. If you have any queries, please contact Matthew Wright, Estates Surveyor

DCC engineers have identified improvements to this section of the riverbank as the priority to reduce the risk of erosion and the potential loss of the footpath link between the City and Maiden Castle, Shincliffe and beyond. The work will provide lasting benefits, make the footpath safer and will enhance the wider infrastructure improvements being brought forward to support the University’s £35m investment into the sporting facilities at the Graham Sports Centre.
