Blackboard Learn Ultra workshops

If you’re starting to consider moving your course content across to our new Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard Learn Ultra, you may be interested in some of our workshops that we’re running over the coming weeks. To support you with the move, DCAD will be hosting a series of online workshops. This is a continuation of the Learn Ultra workshop series that has been running throughout April and May, and will be cover different subjects.

Change to study spaces opening times and availability

After the exam and assessment period, our study spaces and opening times will be revised. From 5 June onwards, pre-booked timeslots for our current services will remain available for those currently in Durham at Bill Bryson Library, Teaching and Learning Centre, and Leazes Road Study Space with some updated opening times. Other study spaces we have facilitated since the beginning of Easter Term will no longer be available. Please visit our website for full details.

Italian course at St John's

This intermediate level Italian language course runs online on Teams every Friday, 7pm-7.55pm, for six weeks starting Friday 4 June 2021. The teacher is a native Italian speaker, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with a PG-cert in Academic Practice and with years’ experience in teaching and the sessions will be highly interactive. All fees will be donated to support St John’s College and its activities during the pandemic.

Launch of the Hybrid Working Information Hub

From September 2021, we will be trialling hybrid working for Professional Services colleagues for the academic year 21/22. We have launched a Hybrid Working Information Hub so you can find out more about hybrid working arrangements and engage in the planning for your team’s hybrid working arrangements.

Love and attraction study

Participants are wanted for a large-scale, international study into which factors predict love, attraction and attractiveness. The study is completed online and anyone aged 18 and older can take part. You can access the study here

Meet the dogs that can sniff out Covid-19

Find out how Asher and his furry friends are able to use their super sniffing powers to detect Covid-19. The initial results from this exciting research project, involving Professor Steve Lindsay from Biosciences, show that dogs are so much more than loving pets. Take a look at the full story.

Microsoft 365 - brush up on your basics

Before we close the Office 365 Engagement & Enablement project in July, we want to give you the opportunity to brush up on your basics and learn some great skills from our new range of support. We're hosting a series of live interactive webinars to showcase the most popular Microsoft 365 apps, how these work together and also group sessions for users to work with their colleagues to use the functionality specifically for their work areas. You can also access a library of short snappy videos of the most common M365 apps, tools and tasks for Durham University or make use of the Microsoft resources signposted on the project Learning Hub. To sign up for the interactive webinars or group sessions, visit our M365 Learning Hub

Personalised teaching timetables for all academics and students coming in 21/21

You’ve told us that accessing timetables is a major pain point for you as staff, so as part of our Digital Strategy and commitment to making IT easier for our people, we are introducing a new timetabling tool next academic year. MyTimetable will provide an online personalised timetable for all staff with a teaching responsibility. It will show where and when the lectures, seminars and workshops you teach will take place. We will be launching MyTimetable Monday 7 June and will be back in touch to let you know how you can access your personalised teaching timetable shortly. Public engagement - a route to 'research impact'

Our researchers are using their expertise to identify solutions to a range of Global Goals. This has the potential to make an impact and save many lives if the outcomes of our research can be effectively translated into development policy and practice. The training event on Wednesday 26 May 2021 focused on how to engage with the public, media and network with relevant stakeholders and policy leaders to provide the route to impact and innovation needed for successful outcomes.

RTProjects will be hosting a fundraising event called ‘Run to the Sun’ on 19 and 20 June vía Zoom to promote awareness of suicide and suicide prevention! The UK Government has issued new guidance for people living in areas where the new Covid-19 variant is spreading. This includes North Tyneside. Please visit gov.uk to find out more. You should continue to work from home if your role enables you to do so. This guidance applies to colleagues living in all areas of England.
