Request for Information on Women in Education

Durham Energy Institute has been invited to take part in a new initiative for the Durham Miners' Gala which is a Women's Banner Group. The Institure will create two 60cm x 60cm pieces of patchwork for the Community Quilt Banner based around the themes of 'Women in Energy' and 'Women in Education' specific to Durham. The first female admitted to Durham was in 1881, first female degrees were awarded in 1895 and the first female professor was appointed in 1971, but if anyone is aware of any other Durham women 'firsts' please get in touch with If anyone has any information on the story of the male students throwing their mortarboards into the river in protest of women being accepted into the University please also get in touch. The banner will have its official unveiling at Redhill's on 10 July ahead of the Durham Miner's Gala on 14 July.

Road Closure - Owengate

Durham County Council will have a full road closure in place on Owengate between Monday, 26 February and Friday, 23 March. The road closure will be in place Monday to Friday between 8.30am - 4.30pm to enable essential repair works.

Essential Guide to Research Funding Support Workshop

The Research Operations team will be holding a workshop on the practical side of submitting a research grant application and the process when applications are successful. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, 11 April between 1.30pm and 4.30pm in the Turner Room at Van Mildert College. This cross-faculty workshop is open to all academic staff, particularly new staff to Durham and those with little or no experience of submitting a research grant application. To register for the event please contact
