Congratulations to the School of Sociology, the Department of Geography and the Chemistry Department on achieving Bronze at the latest round of awards.The awards celebration will take place at Swansea University in July.

Call for applications - Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation Studentship

Applications are invited for the Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation Studentship to support a suitably qualified postgraduate student for a three year PhD programme of research in Geography at Durham University. The Studentship is to support research of high academic quality that helps to build resilience to hazards and risks challenging human societies, particularly in the global south. Further details of the Studentship and the application procedure are available here. Applicants must follow the application procedures in full in order to be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview which will be conducted using Skype or video conferencing. Footprint: an environmental event

Footprint is an environmental event held on Friday, 15 June and Saturday, 16 June. It will look at ways in which we as individuals and communities can reduce our environmental impact, and how to encourage a more positive and hopeful discussion about climate change. There are 20 free early bird tickets and standard prices are only £7. Psychology department study seeking participants aged 40-75

Researchers in the Psychology department are looking for participants between the ages of 40-75 to fill out an online questionnaire about imagination, self-identity, and paranormal beliefs. The questionnaire takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. If you have any questions about the study, you can contact peter.moseley@durham.ac.uk. The questionnaire can be accessed here.

Two funding opportunities available

There are currently two funding opportunities available to support collaboration with universities in Brazil. FAPESP-Durham SPRINT (São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration) initiative is currently open for applications and will close on 30 July 2018. CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) have just announced an initiative (in Portuguese) ‘School of Advanced Studies’ which aims to bring teachers/researchers of international standing to Brazil for short stays of up to a month. Language courses available this summer

The Centre for Foreign Language Study is offering courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish this summer. All are open to staff, students and members of the public. A range of levels is available, offering the opportunity to start learning a language as a beginner, or to develop your existing language skills.
