Name: Carolyn Fowler
Job title: Registrar & Secretary
I grew up in Kent and came to Durham to do my undergraduate degree, graduating from Castle in History in 1990. I have been in the North East ever since. I began my working life as a contract manager in an engineering company but moved into HE administration in 1995 at Northumbria University. My first post in Durham was at the School of Education, where I was the School administrator for five years before moving to what is now the Academic Support Office. Following that I helped to set up the Strategic Planning and Change Unit as its Deputy Director, and then took up post as Academic Registrar in November 2005. During this time I also managed the University's submission to RAE2008. I was appointed as Registrar and Secretary on 1 April 2009.
What issues do you represent on UEC?
In statute I am responsible for the conduct of the University's business, so it's quite a broad role! In practice I manage the professional support services (with the exception of Finance and Estates), and oversee the University's governance arrangements in my role as Secretary to both Senate and Council.
What would you like to see change in the University?
Fewer emails and more time for conversations over coffee.
What do you think is Durham's best kept secret?
Grey College chocolate cookies.
