Sustainable Development Goals

Our work helps to achieve several Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations.

In particular, SDG Goals: 7 for Affordable and Clean Energy; 9 for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities; 13 on Climate Action, and 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.

A key strength of DEI is the world-leading researchers we engage with from science, social science and humanities departments across Durham University to build multidisciplinary teams, as evidenced by the National Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI), The Customer Led Network Revolution (CLNR), The North East Centre for Energy Materials (NECEM), BritGeothermal and our Centres of Doctoral Training (CDTs).

Truly interdisciplinary research

We were one of the first energy centres to focus on building true interdisciplinary research - not just between Engineers and Economists but also with Anthropologists, Geographers, Physicists, Chemists, Biologists, Philosophers, Law researchers etc. We emphasise a 'Science and Society' approach to energy which integrates social, policy and technical insights to produce world-leading research on decarbonisation.

About Us

We produce world-class research for understanding energy decarbonisation and deliver integrated solutions for the climate emergency incorporating social, policy and technical insights. Our research is rooted in strong partnerships with industry and policy organisations at home and abroad to ensure our projects address rapidly changing energy priorities and key sector innovation challenges.

We believe that by drawing on insights from different sectors and disciplines, and by approaching energy systems in a holistic and integrated way, the most effective solutions to global energy challenges can be developed and implemented.

From anthropology to physics, from the history of coal mining to developing technologies for our future such as hydrogen transportation, Durham Energy Institute covers the spectrum of energy research.
