The BA Business and Management, BA Marketing, Masters in Business and Management and Masters in Marketing degrees share a common first year, therefore it is possible to switch between courses upon successful completion of year one.
This introduces the study of key business topics:
- People, Management and Organisation
- Changing World of Business
Students start to develop business, investigation and project skills in a further module devoted to a range of business-related activities such as developing a business plan for a new start-up. There are five core modules and a choice of a further business, economics or language optional module. The modules work together to build your knowledge and develop key skills and techniques
The second year sees the Business and Marketing degrees separate and build towards their specialist areas, though half of the modules remain common. Investigative and key business skills are developed further and integrated across the entire second year as well as forming a basis for the third year. The importance of international aspects of business is highlighted. The Business and Management degrees focus on the management of operations and information systems and offer optional modules in areas such as marketing, entrepreneurship and business law.
Central to year three is the Dissertation double module. Contemporary Issues in Management, a module based on inputs from specialist researchers and invited business speakers, and three further specialist modules complete the year on both courses. The Dissertation and optional modules allow you considerable opportunities to focus your studies on areas of special interest and to engage more closely with the School’s research groups through seminars and guest speaker programmes.
Learning and Teaching
Students on this programme learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, informal but scheduled one-on-one support, and self-directed learning, such as research, reading, and writing. All of these are supported by a state of the art virtual learning environment, Durham University Online (DUO).
Seminars and workshops are much smaller groups than lectures, small enough to allow one-on-one interaction with professors and lecturers. Workshops also allow hands-on experience of solving business problems. This emphasis on small-group teaching reflects a conscious choice to enhance the quality of the learning experience rather than the quantity of formal sessions. In fact, the degree programme is designed to feature fewer formal sessions and more independent research as students move from their first to their final year.
Small-group teaching and one-on-one attention from the personal academic advisor (provided for all students when they enter the programme) are part of the learning experience throughout, but by the final year classroom time gives way, to some extent, to independent research, including a capstone dissertation—supported by one-on-one supervision—that makes up a third of final year credits.
In this way the degree programme systematically transforms the student from a consumer of knowledge in the classroom to a generator of knowledge, ready for professional or postgraduate life. These formal teaching arrangements are supported by “drop-in” surgeries with teaching staff and induction sessions that begin in the week before the start of the programme and continue at key times throughout each year of the programme.
Students can also attend an extensive programme of research-focused seminars where staff and visiting scholars present their cutting edge research.
Subjects required, level and grade
In addition to satisfying the University’s general entry requirements, please note:
- If Mathematics is not taken as an A-level subject, a grade A in Mathematics at GCSE is essential.
- We welcome applications from those with other qualifications equivalent to our standard entry requirements and from mature students with non-standard qualifications or who may have had a break in their study.
- We do not include General Studies as part of any offer; however we do consider all other A-level subjects.
- In the absence of three full A-levels we may consider two AS-levels in place of one A-level, providing the AS-levels are in separate subjects.
- We will be reviewing our entry requirements for 2016 entry in the summer of 2015 and will publish finalised entry requirements for 2016 entry on the University’s website and at UCAS before 1 September 2015.
- Please consult the University website for required evidence of English language proficiency.
- We are willing to consider applications for deferred entry from those who have well- structured plans for work or travel, for example. We may, however, need to restrict the number of deferred entry offers we make because we have to be careful not to fill too many of next year’s places in advance. However, if you do apply for a deferred place and are unsuccessful, you are welcome to reapply the following year.
- If you do not satisfy our general entry requirements, the Foundation Centre offers multidisciplinary degrees to prepare you for a range of specified degree courses.

IELTS of 6.5 (no component under 6.0); TOEFL iBT 92 (no component under 23); Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) Grade C; or Cambridge Advanced (CAE) Grade A.
