JCR Membership Charge - New Undergraduate Students

The JCR membership fee (levy) is currently £55 per year, and on joining you'll become a member of a community of over 1,100 students. Most students opt to pay for the duration of their degree at the start of their studies (£165 for a 3-year BSc/BA/LLB); please note students who are studying on a 4-year integrated Masters course (MEng, MPhys, MSci etc.) benefit from a reduced rate of £40 for their fourth and final year, so pay £205 in total. Students who would find the payment of the three or four year charge at the start of their time at Durham prohibitive, should contact Dr Newman, the Vice-Master of the College in confidence via grey.admissions@durham.ac.uk to discuss alternative arrangements. The JCR is run by students for students, and whilst JCR membership is optional, we strongly encourage all students to join to enable them to make the most of their time at Durham. The levy goes towards subsidising the running of the JCR and its activities. Through participation in sports and societies, students get to know many people from across the College. The JCR organises most of the student life and activity in College and members can:
  • Join practices, performances (or equivalent) and meetings of college societies and sports clubs, including the right to stand for office of the society/club. Non-members can only participate if they pay a yearly joining fee for each club/society they wish to join;
  • Vote at JCR meetings, and stand for elected office;
  • Represent the JCR on college committees, and through taking on unelected roles supporting and organising JCR activity, including helping with Welcome week and Visit Days;
  • Priority booking time and payment of preferential members’ rates to events organised by the JCR (including Welcome Week, Balls, Formal and Special Dinners).
  • Access to use of JCR equipment (musical instruments, sports, tech);
  • Preferential rate on membership of the College gym.

  • MCR Membership Charge - Postgraduate Students

    The Middle Common Room Levy (membership fee) is £55 per year, and upon joining you'll be a member of a community of around 100 postgraduates in the College, able to fully partipate in its wider academic and social life. The MCR is run by students for students, and whilst membership is optional we strongly encourage all students to join to make the most of their time at Durham. The levy goes towards subsidising the running of the MCR and its activities. Not opting into the charge means that you will not be entitled to take part in these activities or will be subject to an additional charge per event when non-members are invited. Additionally, members of the MCR also benefit from automatic membership of the undergraduate Common Room, the JCR, whose benefits have been given above.

    Optional Charges

    Linen Pack: Students resident in College and arriving from Overseas and the Islands, can order and pay for a Linen Pack including duvet and cover, pillow and pillow case, and sheet, costing £35 in advance of their arrival. These will be placed in your room ready for your arrival.

    Refund Policy

    If a student decides they no-longer wish to participate in the student life of Grey College (JCR membership for undergraduates or MCR membership for postgraduates, respectively), a refund can be applied for up until the end of the first week of term (Sunday 10th October). Students who join the JCR or MCR after this point, having experienced college life, will not be eligible for a refund.
    Refunds for the JCR (undergraduate student) Welcome week charge are possible up until Sunday 26th September, when students will have arrived at the College and begun the welcome activities.
    Refunds for the Linen pack are available up until the day before your arrival at the College.
    If a student decides they no-longer wish to be an Associate member of the Grey College Association, a refund can be applied for up until the end of the second week of term (Sunday 17th October).
