The Bishop Dunn Memorial Lecture 2019

Tuesday, 26 February 2019

Professor Myriam Wijlens, University of Erfurt, Germany. Honorary Professor of Ecumenism and Canon Law at the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University.

‘Communio fidelium - communio ecclesiarum - communio episcoporum: Representation in Synodal Structures’

Pope Francis’ reform of the church focuses on the Roman Curia, a healthy decentralization and a transformation from a hierarchical to a more synodal church. This is necessary because God’s encounter with people (revelation) as well as effective evangelization cannot take place without consideration of the local context. Episcopal conferences will play a major role in the new configuration as they will connect the local and universal. Consideration of context and decentralisation will, however, imply a diversity in unity. It all will require a reflection about the interconnection of synodality, sensus fidelium and teaching authority of episcopal conferences. Or to put it differently: who actually speaks on behalf of whom in the church and with what kind of authority?
