Welcome to Computer Science at Durham

As a UK Top 10 Department (Complete University Guide 2024) we are committed to high quality teaching and research.

Computer Science increased excellence in all areas of research since the last research assessment exercise, moving 6 places up the ranking to the 20th position for REF 2021. See more information at REF 2021 Result - Durham University. Read about some of our most recent research achievements.

We are located in the beautiful city of Durham and have recently moved into a brand new purpose built building along with the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

We are proud of the emphasis we place on equality, diversity and inclusion and are working hard to make our department the no.1 University in the UK for women to study Computer Science.

Areas to get involved in

Work with us

The Department of Computer Science is expanding! Recruitment for 2024 is closed but we expect to be advertising further permanent positions early in 2025.

We have already doubled in size over the last few years and we are aiming to expand up to around 60 academic staff. We value all our staff – whether they are working in professional support, teaching or research – and have placed diversity and inclusion at the heart of our strategy and operations. We are keen to hear from candidates from all backgrounds. We are working hard to build a more inclusive department which is outward-facing.
