Curtain set to rise on new online theatre festival

(27 April 2020)

Though the Covid-19 restrictions have forced us to cancel student theatre shows until further notice, we’re excited to be working with Durham’s Gala Theatre to present an online theatre festival this June.

Onstage: Online – a digital festival

We’re proud to introduce Onstage: Online, a digital festival featuring both short and longer theatre productions.

All shows will be created in line with UK Government advice and restrictions on limiting the spread of the virus.

The festival will run from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 June.

Live sessions will be streamed each day on the Gala Theatre’s YouTube channel and there will be scheduled pre-recorded shows, too.

The videos will be shared on social media and remain available on our YouTube channel to enjoy when the festival is over.

How to get involved

Theatre companies and performing arts groups in County Durham are invited to apply to take part.

Those selected will receive up to £250 to help create their production.

Emerging theatre companies will also be offered free mentoring.

The deadline for applications is Monday 11 May. For more information, contact Kate Barton, our Head of Student Theatre: 0191 334 4316, assemblyrooms.theatre@durham.ac.uk

Student theatre at Durham

Durham University has one of the most vibrant and exciting student theatre scenes of any university in the country. Durham Student Theatre includes 27 companies, presenting over 100 shows every year.

We recently completed a £2.4m renovation of our Assembly Rooms Theatre, which is open to students and the public. Though Covid-19 has meant the temporary closure of the Theatre, we look forward to welcoming you when conditions allow.

In the meantime, good luck to all Onstage: Online applicants, and we hope you enjoy the shows!
