We’re passionate about inspiring and equipping the next generation of scientists, and helping young people explore the huge range of exciting careers available in science.

Recently, we helped run a Space Challenge day for young people from local schools, helping them understand space science and improve their foreign language skills.

What was the Space Challenge?

Young people were challenged to build a prototype of an international space hotel.

They then had to pitch for funds for their project from French and Spanish-speaking would-be investors.

Year 10 pupils from 10 County Durham schools took part, working together in teams.

Dr Azadeh Fattahi was the main speaker on the day, talking about her inspiring research in our Institute for Computational Cosmology.

Durham County Council’s international relations team and Business Durham organised the day to show how languages and science are used in the world of work.
