Celebrating Lunar New Year: The Year of the Rat

(23 January 2020)

Durham City celebrations, 2019

We’re proud of the contributions of all our students and staff, who come from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. So we’re pleased to be playing our part in Durham’s celebrations of the Lunar New Year.

What you can see and do…

The Year of the Rat celebrations begin on Saturday 25 January, with a craft making session at our Oriental Museum. The Museum is also hosting a Lunar New Year exhibition, which runs until Sunday 16 February.

A huge range of events are planned for Durham city centre on Saturday 1 February, including:

  • Chinese language taster sessions, from one of our Chinese teachers;
  • Traditional dancing and music, from members of our Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA);
  • A Han fashion show, also from CSSA; and
  • Chinese-themed performances by local schools, who have been supported by students from our Ustinov and St Mary’s colleges.

Finally, on Saturday 8 February, the Oriental Museum will be open late for a spectacular Lantern Festival.
