Curtains rise on the newly refurbished Assembly Rooms Theatre

(1 November 2019)

As we work to deliver a world-class student experience, we are investing significantly in our estates and facilities and increasingly making them available to the community.

Following a year long, £2.5 million restoration project, we have reopened the Assembly Rooms Theatre. The theatre will be home to local theatre companies ‘Grim Up North’ and ‘Elysium Theatre’, as well as Durham University Student Theatre, and we hope that the talent on display will enhance the City’s cultural scene.

The theatre reopened on Saturday 26 October and we have planned a very exciting programme of events for everyone across the county, staff and students alike.

Situated on North Bailey, in the most historic part of Durham, the theatre now boasts a revamped box office area, improved facilities and the restoration of the original 150 year old ceiling.

What's on?

Performances are in full swing and highlights include 'New and DIMproved' - an off-the-cuff improvised musical based entirely on audience suggestions, 'Enron' - a theatrical epic and dazzling exposition of the shadowy mechanisms of economic deceit, and 'Sita' - a magical journey through Indian mythology and culture.
