Our first new College in 14 years: on track for 2020

(11 October 2019)

How South College gateway will look

As we grow, we want the benefits to be shared across our region. We want to contribute more to the local economy, have more of our students living in College accommodation and make more of our facilities open to our local communities.

So we’re pleased that our first new College in 14 years, South College, is on track to open for 2020, and will bring many benefits to the local community.

About South College…

South College is part of our Mount Oswald development, on South Road, Durham City, which will also include a new home for our existing John Snow College, a University Hub building and a multi-use games area.

It will include 492 bed spaces plus four one-bedroom flats.

There will be a mixture of single en-suite bedrooms and Town Houses with single rooms around shared bathrooms facilities.

All accommodation at South College will be self-catered with communal kitchens provided for students to prepare and cook meals.

Community benefits

The Mount Oswald development will bring benefits to the local community, including that the multi-use games area will be available for community use.

Our construction partner, Interserve, is using local suppliers where possible and is also running educational visits and work placement opportunities for local schools and colleges.
