(23 August 2019)

We’re proud of the contribution we make to the cultural scene in Durham and the North East. That’s why we’re very excited to announce we’re opening a new theatre venue in the City.

Come see our ‘Spare Room’

The Spare Room is a 50-seat performance space in the former East Gym, part of our College of St Hild and St Bede.

It will host shows by both student and professional theatre companies. Performances will start in early October.

A flexible, intimate space

The Spare Room is a ‘black box’ space, which will bring audiences and performers up close and can be reorganised to suit each show.

It was previously at the 53two arts hub in Manchester and will initially operate for two years.

What you can see…

The first professional show will be Playland, presented by the Durham-based theatre company Elysium.

Artistic Director Jake Murray said The Spare Room was very exciting for the City’s theatre scene and he can’t wait for Playland to open.

There will be performances from Wednesday 30 October to Saturday 2 November.

Details of upcoming shows will be published at theassemblyroomstheatre.org.

More theatre to come…

The opening of The Spare Room comes ahead of our Assembly Rooms Theatre reopening in October following a £2.4 million makeover.
