Technician Ian is a real lifesaver
(21 June 2019)
We’re proud of the positive contribution our staff make to their local communities, and we want to support them to do this however possible.
So we’re very pleased to congratulate Ian Garrett, an electrical technician in our Engineering Department, on receiving an ‘above and beyond’ award from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) Trust.
Ian was chosen for the award for providing medical aid to a parent who had suffered a cardiac arrest while attending one of our Open Days in March.
Ian is an NEAS community first responder, which means if a medical emergency happens nearby while he is “on-call”, the Ambulance Service can contact him to ask for urgent help.
We support him to perform this vital role by allowing him to be on-call while he’s at work, and being as flexible as possible if an emergency occurs. We benefit too, by having someone skilled and experienced in dealing with medical situations close at hand.
In 18 years as a community responder, Ian has volunteered nearly 26,000 hours and helped over 1,200 patients.
Sharing resources and expertise
The medical situation Ian responded to in March required him to use one of our automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), of which we have 22 spread across our sites.
Currently, those AEDs located outdoors are available for anyone to use. We’re now hoping to make those located indoors available too.
We’re also training more of our staff in how to use AEDs, and Ian himself will be helping to deliver this training.
