Remembering Prof John Clarke

(10 April 2019)

Prof John Clarke

An oak tree has been planted in memory of Professor John Clarke, who helped establish Teikyo University of Japan in Durham.

Prof Clarke joined us as a young Geography lecturer in the 1950s and rose to become a Pro-Vice-Chancellor. In 1998, he signed the agreement for a Japanese cultural centre and overseas branch of the Japanese university, which was established two years later.

A Deputy Lieutenant of County Durham, he retired in 1990, continuing as an Emeritus Professor. He was awarded an OBE for his services to the community.

He died in May 2018, aged 89.
