County Durham is powered by people

(5 February 2019)

“Durham, I have come to realise, has a capacity to astound out of all proportion to its size. I don’t know any place that manages to be more intimate and infinite at once.”

Bill Bryson, international author and former Chancellor of Durham University

If you work, live or study in Durham, you might be inclined to agree with Bill Bryson’s statement about how much the area has to offer. This is why we are supporting the Powered by People initiative.

A great county

The initiative, led by Durham County Council, aims to attract new businesses and industry to the county. It highlights the benefits of living, working and investing in the area.

As a world top 100 university located in the heart of the city, we make up part of all the great things County Durham has to offer.

We have over 4,000 staff working here from all over the world, helping us to combine excellent teaching with second-to-none student support.

Our programmes, like the Durham Internships Collaborative Enterprise (DICE), pair talented Durham students with SMEs in County Durham, helping businesses to grow and develop.

We help to support the local economy in lots of different of ways – we are worth £1.1bn a year to the UK economy and £600m to the local economy.

We have launched 25 spin out companies supporting nearly 1,000 jobs and our staff and students dedicate nearly 40,000 hours of volunteering each year.

As a university, we are powered by people.

Beauty spots

Durham is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is less than three hours away from London and within easy reach of beauty spots like the Northumberland coastline, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.

We are proud to be part of a place as unique as County Durham.
