Student Volunteers take part in national event

(16 February 2018)

From 19 to 25 February, Durham University students will take part in Student Volunteering Week 2018, a nationwide initiative that encourages university students to volunteer within their local communities.

Students have a fantastic chance to learn new skills, improve post-graduate job prospects, and give something of value back to the local community – all as part of Student Volunteering Week 2018.

Programme of events

A packed programme of projects and events, offers Durham students a plethora of opportunities.

Throughout the week there will be as many as 38 different ‘Give it a Go’ sessions and one-off volunteering opportunities, delivered by Student Community Action (SCA), for students at Durham City and Stockton campuses.

These include a conservation event in the beautiful and historic Auckland Castle, a spring-themed children’s party, and an Olympics Sports Day event for disabled adults at Pelton Community Centre.

Outreach activities

There are also sport outreach sessions run by Team Durham Community, as well as Music Durham and Durham Student Theatre outreach.

Each year, over 1,000 Durham University students volunteer to get involved with nearly 84 projects across the community – amounting to approximately 25,000 hours of time.

Student volunteers also have access to free and exclusive training to prepare them for each project, organised by SCA, in collaboration with external companies and institutions. The volunteering projects also allow Durham University to foster meaningful and long-lasting partnerships with employers, third sector organisations, and local people.

Student Volunteering Week 2018

Student Volunteering Week 2018 – now in its 17th year – is organised by the Student Volunteering Network and supported by Student Hubs and the National Union of Students. The Week brings together a rich range of organisations from different sectors to promote and celebrate students’ volunteering efforts.

Last year, over 55,000 students and 100 institutions got involved and this year Durham is aiming to top that figure with more student volunteering than ever.
