(13 January 2016)
Action requested: For those TEIs who have not done so already, we would like to request that TEIs submit the following information to the University in relation to TEI Boards of Examiners:
- TEI BoE membership lists for the 2015/16 academic year
- Meeting dates of their 2015/16 TEI Boards of Examiners
Further information on these requests is set out below:
TEI BoE Membership Lists 2015/16
As you will be aware, TEIs are required to submit the membership lists of their TEI Boards of Examiners to the University for approval each academic year. We would like to request that TEIs submit their TEI Boards of Examiners membership lists for 2015/16 in order for these to be considered at the Common Awards Management Board for recommendation to QSSC. A template TEI BoE membership list is attached to this email.
TEI BoE membership lists are required to be considered at TEI Management Committees prior to submission to the University.
The submission deadlines for TEI BoE membership lists to the University are as follows:
For consideration at the 26th January 2016 meeting of the Management Board
Submission deadline: Thursday 22nd January 2016
For consideration at the 26th April 2016 meeting of the Management Board
Submission deadline: Friday 8th April 2016
Please can TEIs inform us which Management Board meeting they intend to submit their TEI BoE membership list for consideration at.
We are aware that some TEIs have already submitted amendments to their existing membership lists to the University for approval. If your TEI BoE membership list has undergone no further changes since it was last approved, please notify us of this and we will confirm the existing membership list with you and then submit this version for consideration at the Management Board for 2015/16.
TEI BoE membership lists are required to include identification of a Chair, a Secretary, the University Liaison Officer and the External Examiner and a number of internal examiners. Guidance on the membership requirements for TEI Boards of Examiners is available in the TEI Handbook.
For 2014/15 a number of TEIs initially submitted TEI BoE membership lists to the University that included a large number of staff as internal examiners, on the basis that staff were required to be members of TEI Boards of Examiners in order to be eligible to undertake double-marking and moderation.
To provide clarification: the eligibility requirements for staff to be internal examiners on TEI BoEs and to undertake double-marking and moderation are the same; they should be core or experienced staff (such as programme or module leaders) in order to ensure there is appropriate oversight of moderation and assessment. However staff are not required to be members of TEI Boards of Examiners in order to be eligible to undertake double-marking; double-markers are simply required to be core or experienced staff. The approval process for TEI Boards of Examiners membership lists is not an approval process for staff eligibility to undertake double-marking and moderation. TEIs are expected to maintain oversight of the eligibility of staff to undertake double-marking and moderation themselves.
Therefore the number of internal examiners in TEI BoE membership lists should only be a representative sample of core and experienced staff (programme and module leaders) who teach on the Common Awards programmes. This is important to ensure that the number of attendees present at meetings of TEI BoE is manageable.
As a reminder the TEI Handbook includes guidance on TEI Boards of Examiners. This includes the requirements for the membership of TEI Boards of Examiners, and brief information on the appointment and approval of members of Boards of Examiners.
TEI Board of Examiners meeting dates 2015/16
Please could TEIs send the meeting dates of their 2015/16 meetings of their TEI Boards of Examiners to the Common Awards Team as soon as possible. We will then log these on the TEI BoE meeting dates page of the TEI Handbook and ensure that the ULO schedule of attendance is confirmed.
TEI Boards of Examiners should take place in good time to allow reporting to the overarching University Board of Examiners for those students who will be ready for award and classification. The 2015/16 meetings of the overarching Board will follow the same pattern as last year, with a summer meeting which will take place late July-August and a winter meeting which will take place late November-December. The specific dates of these meetings will be confirmed shortly and made available to TEIs.
If TEIs have any questions about the above, please feel free to contact us.
