The Committee shall normally meet six times a year.

Terms of Reference

The Research Committee has oversight of all aspects of the Research strand of the University Strategy 2010-2020. The Committee shall:

a) develop and recommend to UEC, Senate and Council (via Senate), strategy and policy 0 to deliver internationally excellent research with global impact; more specifically, to support maximising the quality of outputs and impact and the winning of funding to support our research;
b) acquire and maintain an institutional knowledge of our research strengths and of the external research landscape;
c) monitor the University’s research performance and provide assurance to UEC, Senate and Council (via Senate);
d) oversee and provide assurance to UEC, Senate and Council (via Senate) on the University’s submission to the REF or similar national exercises and on research grant income generation;
e) advise UEC, Senate and Council (via Senate) on University facilities and infrastructure for research to enhance research excellence ;
f) receive reports from the Research Management Committee identifying and recommending good practice in managing, promoting and resourcing research;
g) ensure that the University’s support mechanisms for research, research partnerships, impact (both in the specific REF sense and more generally) and research communication, are fit for purpose;
h) monitor cross-disciplinary activities, including Institutes and Centres, ensuring that they support the research strategy and research grant capture effectively and deliver the highest quality outputs and impacts; approve new Centres and the continuation of existing Centres; make recommendations to Senate for the approval of new Institutes and the continuation of existing Institutes on the basis of 5 yearly reviews;
i) promote and monitor strategic links between the University and research funders, research users, and research partners, thereby maximising the impact of our research nationally and globally;
j) oversee the development of University responses to external consultations on research-related issues;
k) work with the Dean and Deputy to the PVC Education, and Education Committee, to develop strategy and practice for post-graduate research students, in particular promoting and winning Durham Doctoral Training Centres;
l) receive reports and recommendations from its sub-committees on strategic issues relating to research.
m) As per University statute 41c the committee shall be quorate when attended by ten members or not less than one-third of the current membership (whichever is the lower figure).
