Mr Richard Burge, BSc

Richard joined Council as a lay member on 1 August 2011. Richard is Chair of Ethics Advisory Committee, a member of Governance and Nominations and Remuneration Committees and is Chair of Hatfield College Council.

He has been Chief Executive, Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) since 2017. For the previous 8 years, he was Chief Executive of Wilton Park (a Foreign and Commonwealth Office agency for conciliation and dialogue on global issues). He is a Commissioner for Commonwealth Scholarships.

He graduated from Hatfield College in 1980 and was a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Peradeniiya, Sri Lanka.

From 1995 to 1999 Richard was the first Director General of the Zoological Society of London responsible for the management of London Zoo, Whipsnade and Europe’s largest conservation science research centre.

Born in Hong Kong, Richard has spent much of his life outside the UK having worked in over 50 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Richard worked for the British Council for ten years, beginning in Nigeria with his last post as Head of Africa and Middle East Development Operations. He was previously Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance (1999-2003) and has run his own environmental consultancy business.
