Mr Ian Thompson
Ian is a co-opted member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee for 2013-14.
He is Corporate Director Regeneration and Economic Development at Durham County Council. He was appointed to this post in 2009 and has over 20 years’ experience in many aspects of local government including economic development, planning and regeneration.
He previously held the posts of Head of Regeneration and Development at City of York, Head of Planning and Development at Basingstoke and Deane BC, Head of Regeneration and Economic Development at Stockton on Tees BC and Group Director Regeneration and Development at Calderdale MBC. In his current role and his earlier role at Stockton, Ian has developed strong regional contacts with other authorities, local business, the HCA, and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.
With experience in all aspects of regeneration, particularly strategy development, major projects, and partnership working, Ian has provided corporate leadership on areas across and outside his technical skills base.
At Stockton and Calderdale he was responsible for the Council’s Tourism operation, and in both instances worked with partners as part of the Area Tourism Partnership arrangements. At Durham he has a similar responsibility in an area with great potential for increased tourism activity.
