Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF)

Support for TEF

The Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) was introduced in 2016. The TEF was developed by the Department for Education and is carried out by the Office for Students (OfS). The ratings are judged by an independent panel of students, academics and other experts.

The Curriculum, Learning & Assessment Service is responsible for the coordination, analysis and drafting of TEF Submissions. Any questions about TEF should be directed to Andy Rennie or Andy Burn in the first instance.

"Durham University delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK." TEF 2018

Our current TEF Award (2018-2021) is Gold. Durham received this in recognition of our:

  • comprehensive support mechanisms that are in place to ensure students from all backgrounds achieve outstanding outcomes
  • rigorous monitoring procedures, which are part of an institutional culture that facilitates, recognises and rewards excellent teaching and is embedded across the provider
  • research-led provision providing students with relevant employability skills that are most highly valued by employers
  • rates of continuation and progression to highly skilled employment or further study for full-time students [that] are exceptionally high.

Further information on Durham's TEF Submission, and the TEF Panel's Full Statement of Findings, are available from the OfS webpages.
